May is the month when Aberdeen lights up with exciting literary talent. Once again the University of Aberdeen's Word festival will be bringing a variety of big name writers to the city over the weekend of 11-13 May. For the rest of the month its sister festival wordfringe, now in its second year, presents a complementary programme featuring new and promising poets and fiction writers at the beginning of their careers as well as established writers working in innovative contexts.

Many of the writers are drawn from the enormous range of literary talent based in the North-East of Scotland, but there are also guests from Orkney, Shetland and the Highlands, from Edinburgh and Glasgow, as well as from England.

wordfringe 2007 offers book and magazine launches, drama projects, a storytelling session, a performance poetry workshop, a comedy night, a competition prizegiving for young writers, and an event combining poetry with live music and dance, as well as more conventional poetry and fiction readings.

Aberdeen remains at the heart of the festival, but this year we also have events in Banchory, Banff and Ellon, and even one in Edinburgh. Aberdeen's Me FM will also be featuring wordfringe writers on Sunday afternoons throughout May.

Most events are free, so be adventurous, come along and sample some of the incredible range of talent in our midst.
